A house move looks like one big day, but it is really a month of small decisions. This checklist comes from hundreds of Voder moves in and around Davanagere, from single-room shifts near the university to full households moving from a rented place in Vidyanagar to a new build past the ring road. Work through it in order, and the big day turns out surprisingly calm.
Four weeks out: decide what actually moves
The cheapest thing to move is the thing you do not move. Every mover, including us, prices by load size, so the old cot in the loft that nobody has slept on since 2021 is costing you money twice: once to keep, once to carry. Sell it, gift it, or let it go.
- Sort one room, or even one shelf, each day; a month is enough for any house.
- Measure the big items, the fridge, wardrobe and cot, and measure the new house's doors and stair turns.
- Fix the moving date early and avoid month-end weekends, when demand and prices both peak.
- Give the owner notice, and ask at the new place where a truck can stand at the gate.
One week out: paper, photos and packing
- Pack rarely used things first: festival vessels, winter clothes, the books nobody is mid-way through.
- Label every box by room, in Kannada or English, whichever the family reads fastest.
- Keep certificates, jewellery, medicines and chargers in one bag that travels with you, never in the truck.
- Photograph appliances and furniture from two angles before they are wrapped.
- Arrange the gas cylinder transfer, and start address changes for the bank, school and ration card.
Those photographs are also the backbone of insurance. Voder moves come with tiered cover: a basic tier included on every booking, and higher tiers you can add for households with large appliances or fragile items, priced on the booking screen. Claims are photo-first: the pictures taken before wrapping and after unloading decide the matter, so a genuine claim does not turn into a month of phone calls.
Floor charges, explained before moving day
Carrying a double-door fridge up three floors without a lift is slow, careful, physical work, and movers everywhere charge for it per floor. The charge is fair; the surprise is not. Voder asks for floor numbers and lift availability at both houses when you book, and the quote includes the floor charge from the start. If the lift turns out to be too small for the wardrobe, tell us during the pre-move call, not on the morning itself.
One packing rule saves the most tears: the kitchen packs last and opens first. And keep a first-night box, carried in your own vehicle if possible: a kettle, two bedsheets, soap, phone chargers, a knife, medicines, and one change of clothes for everyone.
Moving day
- Walk the empty house last: the loft, the attic, behind bathroom doors, and the meter box.
- Count boxes onto the truck and count them off again, against the labelled list.
- Photograph the electricity meter reading at handover; it settles the last bill without argument.
- Keep the booking number and quote handy; what you pay is what was quoted.
A move is one of those days when a family's whole life is briefly on a truck. Our Davanagere crews pack, lift and set down for a living, speak Kannada, and have carried more wet grinders up more stairs than they can count. If you would like a person to look at your house before quoting, book a free pre-move survey on the packers and movers page.
